I AM ME

My colour is brown
It tells the world I am Asian
But I am me.

My Love is same sex
It tells the world I am gay
But I am me

My age is 47
Tells the world I am middle aged
But I am me

My religion is Islam
Tells the world I am Muslim
But I am me

My disability is Diabetes
Tells the world I am ill
But I am me

I’m told I am brave and bold
I am not
Because I am me

Khakan Qureshi was part of the panel at our LGBT History Month Leadership Masterclass in February. He is the founder of a South Asian LGBT social and support group in Birmingham.

His poem above was part of his presentation to us – a reminder that labels are only labels and that people are people.

He ended his presentation with the words “At the end of the day we are human beings, and isn’t that what matters?”
