Dr. Satwant Rait was born in the Punjab, India and was brought up and educated in Delhi where she gained an M.A. from Delhi University and worked as a school librarian in the Education Department.

She came to England as a result of an arranged marriage in 1968. Satwant went on to work as a librarian in four local authorities in various capacities and grades whilst also studying, leading to her achieving a PhD from Loughborough University in 1993.

Being keen to give something back to her adopted country, Satwant served on the magistrate’s bench as a JP for nearly 18 years.

After her retirement, she travelled widely and now spends most of her time writing. Satwant lost her husband in 2011 and since then has devoted most of her time to caring for patients in Leeds teaching hospitals as an Honorary Chaplain. She had a successful and happy married life and her two children are well settled. Satwant has four grandchildren.
