Lohri is a very popular festival, celebrated by the Punjabi people of the Indian subcontinent to mark the end of Winter. People celebrate the Winter Solstice with bonfires, and joyous folk songs and dances, including Gidha Boliyan and Bhangra. Fires are lit to mark the return of longer days, people putting on their most cheerful, vibrant clothing to make this a truly colourful celebration.
Lohri Stories is a partnership between SAA-uk and Touchstone Sikh Elders Service in Leeds. We are delivering a reminiscence and heritage project inspired by the Punjabi folk arts of Gidha Boliyan and the annual celebration of Lohri. Participants will be sharing their memories and stories, and they’ll be shared on the Lohri Stories website.
Learn bolyian at a weekly group for 55+ years plus. Celebrate Lohri and perform the bolyian with us in 2014.
